Manga Summaries DBZ Chapter 16: Masters and Students Gohan and Piccolo are in the middle of training and Gohan is having alot of trouble fighting Piccolo. Also, Goku finally reaches the end of the Serpent Road. He looks around to see absolutely nothing. Then, he sees a round object very high above him and he jumps for it. He floats above the small planet, seeing it's Kaio-sama's alright. But, heavy gravity pulls him onto the surface and he struggles to walk the gravity is so enormous. He mistakes a monkey for Kaio-sama and tries to match the monkey's moves. When he sees the real Kaio-sama, he realizes that he was mistaken. When he doesn't laugh at Kaio-sama's crappy jokes, Kaio gets angry and refuses to train Goku since he didn't laugh. Immediately, Goku starts to laugh and Kaio lightens up. Kaio tells Goku that he will train him if he can make him laugh. Goku gets angry, saying, "I don't even know what comedians read! Comic books?!" This causes Kaio to start laughing, thinking Goku was wrong when he said he wasn't a comedian. Kaio tells Goku he will train him to be a master of humor. Goku tells him he was seeking martial arts training and Kaio says, "Oh, why didn't you say so?" Kaio tries to get Goku to fight him, but Goku tells him he's not used to the gravity yet. Kaio gets Goku to jump as high as he can and is quite impressed Goku is able to jump so high already. DBZ Chapter 17: The Hardest Time of His Death After Kaio tells Goku that the saiyajins will reach earth in 158 days, Goku begins to get worried. Kaio tells Goku that 158 days is equal to a few thousand years where they are. Kaio tells Goku that still doesn't mean he will win against them, because the saiyajins are very, very strong, even stronger than him [Kaio]. For Goku's first training excercise, he is to catch Bubbles to overcome the enormous gravity. Goku has a tough time in his armor, so he takes off his armor. When he almost catches Bubbles, the monkey takes off at an incredible speed. Goku asks for something to eat, and Kaio feeds him. Goku eats alot, as usual, and asks Kaio if he ever gets bored on this small planet. Kaio tells him that counting his grass keeps him occupied, plus his latest occupation is driving. Kaio tells Goku to put the heavy weights back on because he will need all the strength he can earn. Goku tells Kaio he can imagine how deadly saiyajins are, because he's one. Meanwhile, Gohan tells Piccolo he's nicer than he thought, though his [Gohan's] mom and dad were scared of him [Piccolo]. Piccolo yells for Gohan to shut up and go to sleep, because he will not make the next day's training as easy as today's. After forty days and forty nights [Earth days], Goku finally catches Bubbles. Kaio is happy that Goku may be able to master the Kaio-ken technique. Kaio gets Goku pumped up for more training, then decides they should have some tea first. Next, we see everyone else have "surpassed" Kami now, so there is nothing more they can be taught. Meanwhile, Goku and Gohan are having a tough time training. DBZ Chapter 18: Closer... Closer... Now, Goku is to shoot a giant brick at super speed with a genki-dama. Goku is able to blow the brick up, astounding Kaio. Kaio tells him that the genki-dama will be much more powerful on earth, due to the fact it will be way bigger than the small planet they are training on. Kaio tells Goku to only use it once, and not to use it at all if he can avoid it, due to its destructive capablity. Next, Kaio realizes that he miscalculated the time that it would take Goku to get back. Kaio tells him the saiyajins will arrive tomorrow and at Goku's current speed, he won't be able to make it back for two days. Kaio gets Goku to put his hand on his back so that he can contact Kame Sen'nin. Goku contacts him, sure enough, and tells Kame Sen'nin that the saiyajins will arrive tomorrow, so he needs to be wished back with the dragonballs right now. Kaio gives Goku new clothes, with his old turtle symbol on the front, and Kaio's symbol on the back. When Bulma, Pu'ar, Oolong, and Bulma wish back Shenlong, Oolong asks for it to beat up the saiyajins who are coming to earth. Shenlong reveals he was made by a god, and cannot surpass the power of the god that made him. So Kame Sen'nin asks Shenlong to bring Goku back to life. Goku's halo vanishes, indicating he is alive once again. He bids farewell to Kaio and Bubbles and begins his journey back to Earth, along the Serpent Road. The next day, at 11:43 A.M., the saiyajins land in their space pods... DBZ Chapter 19: Here They Come... The people of the city gather around the saiyajins' space pods, wondering what the heck they are. Then, Nappa and Vegeta get out of their pods and Nappa blows the city away. Vegeta scolds him for not thinking, because if a dragonball was there, it would now be destroyed. They use their scouters to find the highest readings and Nappa is surprised that there are a half a dozen power levels over 1000. Vegeta detects the two strong readings and they head for them, to find out where the dragonballs are. As Goku is still racing to make it across the Serpent Road, Gohan and Piccolo prepare for the saiyajins to arrive. Kuririn joins them in waiting and takls with Gohan until Piccolo spots the saiyajins hovering above them. DBZ Chapter 20: Let the Games Begin! Vegeta and Nappa confront Piccolo, Gohan, and Kuririn. Vegeta recognizes Piccolo's voice as the one who killed Raditz. Vegeta reveals to Piccolo that he is an alien from the planet Namek. Piccolo tells the saiyajins that he didn't make the dragonballs and gets ready to fight. We learn that Kami-sama created the dragonballs a long time ago. Vegeta and Nappa take off their scouters because they know that's how Raditz was killed (from depending too much on the scouter). Vegeta suggests that Nappa should grow some "Cultivars" (Saibamen) to fight. Nappa plants the six seeds in the ground and dumps some juice on them. This immediately causes the six, little green aliens to grow out of the soil. Next, Tenshinhan and Chaozu arrive, followed by Yamcha. Vegeta suggests each person fight one at a time for sport. Piccolo demands for everyone to go all out, but Kuririn tells him they need to buy time for Goku to arrive. Tenshinhan volunteers to fight first as Vegeta is silent, thinking about something. Tenshinhan begins to fight one of the cultivars and pushes it back with a hit, Next, he runs at the alien and is almost hit by some acid that the cultivar sprays from its head. Tenshinhan runs at the cultivar and slams its head with his elbow, winning the battle.
