Super Saiyajin Son Goku
(Dragonball Z Movie #4)
Written July 24, 2001
I'd have to agree with everyone else, in that this is the worst Dragonball Z movie made.
It just has nothing that stands out that well...
This movie has some funny parts in it, atleast... such as the end with Piccolo, Gohan's
whistling sequence at the beginning, the ending credits, and the Kuririn's movie trademark
sequence ("Why does this always happen to me?!"). One other thing I'll give this movie
credit for is its creativity, such as the "Super Saiyajin Goku" scene, the deaths of
Slug's henchmen, and the whole weather control device ordeal.
Now for the problems that I had with this movie. In my opinion, this movie has the worst
Dragonball Z movie villain, Slug. Atleast Dr. Wheelo looked cool... This guy has nothing
that's good about him. He can grow and is powerful... yippee. Then, there's the things
that make no sense. One: If Piccolo can get rid of the pain that whistling causes by
ripping his ears off, then why doesn't Slag do the same? Also, my belief about the scene
where Goku looks Super Saiya-jin, but without the golden hair is there as a blueprint
for the Super Saiya-jin. I also believe that they called this movie "Super Saiyajin Son
Goku" to show that Goku's a super saiyajin, like an extraordinary saiyajin.
As for how I felt about the artwork and music, neither impressed me very much. Even though
I have a B- quality fansub of this, I can still tell that the artwork isn't all that
impressive. The characters aren't drawn as well as they could be and the technology isn't
all that impressive. It's not like I hate how this movie was animated, but it just isn't
as good as the other movies. The music isn't all that great either... no real good tunes
that I remember. The Gohan's whistling tune is cute, but not something you'd want to buy
a CD to hear. Like the other movies, this one uses music from the series, but if I had a
choice to get any DBZ movie soundtrack, I just wouldn't choose this one.
So am I saying you shouldn't watch this movie? No, but I wouldn't recommend showing this
to someone who doesn't love Dragonball Z. If you're a fan of all things DBZ, then this
might be something that can entertain you for less than an hour, but if you're someone who
just kinda likes DBZ, then you might want to just skip this one. I'm gonna buy the DVD of
this when it comes out, just to have it. But if you have a choice of which DBZ movie to
get, I'd recommend you go with 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, or 13. If you want to know a place where
you can get this movie, I would recommend you wait until next month (August 2001) for the
bilingual DVD to come out and get it then. Or, you can settle for a C+/B- copy and get it
at a fansub distributor.
If the sub was this bad, then I can't begin to imagine how the dub will turn out. *shudders*
