"One Year Anniversary Editorial"
Written: July 24, 2000 from 2:38 PM EDT - July 29, 2000 at 11:03 PM EDT
Well, the day has come. This site has been around for one year.
So... have I learned anything during this year of hard work?
You can bet FUNimation's cheesy dialogue I did.
First of all, I learned a small group of people can screw over a worldwide phenomenon.
It can easily be be ruined with bad dialogue and bad music dubbed onto it.
What's just wrong are the Voice Actor's knowledge of the Japanese version of DBZ.
I think alot of problems with dialogue and acting would be solved if they would watch the Japanese
version of what they are going to dub each time they do an episode.
The music probably can be improved, but all they would need to do is just fork out
some of that 'money they're raking in to pay for the licensing for the next
anime series that they work on' and get the rights to the Japanese score.
If all the other country's dubs can have the original Japanese score,
then why can't we? Also, Seasons 1 and 2 were proffessionally and well-done. Shuki Levy's music
was wonderful compared to the Season 3+ stuff.
I also really wish that they would get Ocean Studios back... that sure would be wonderful.
In my opinion, many key emotional DBZ scenes have been or will be ruined in the future.
Goku's first Super Saiyajin transformation was handled decently... but could've been better.
Gohan's SSJ2 transformation will be nothing without 'Spirit vs. Spirit' playing in the background.
I have the feeling Gohan's SSJ transformation will not
be done so well either. Trunks's voice was much better than I was expecting from the dub,
but alot of key feelings were lost in the dub of the beginning of the Android Saga.
Android 19's voice sounds horrible, Vegeta's SSJ transformation has wayyy too much grunting in it, and
many of the Japanese version's good lines were replaced with odd ones.
FUNimation also really needs to keep the original attack names in the dub. Replacing his 'Big Bang Attack'
with 'Here it comes! A little going away present for you!' just doesn't cut it.
I also have a gut feeling that they will ruin the emotional element in the Heaven's Tournament Saga. The whole time, Goku is continually very excited in getting
the chance to fight such powerful fighters. If they put in a bunch of corny phrases, the whole
focus of him continually being overwhelmed with excitement will be lost.
And now for the DVD's. From what I've heard, the translations are perfect, the names will
become the Japanese ones soon, Head-Cha-La and Zenkai Power are not only in it, but will be subbed in
the next batch of DVD's, and FUNi is working hard on getting them out rather quickly. Also, good 'ol
Steven 'Daimao' Simmons is doing the translations, which is definitely a plus. But then... I read
Chris Psaros's review of the first DVD. Now I am pretty much certain that I will not buy that one (they are fixing
many, many errors as more DVD's are made.. but will they go back and fix that one? hopefully...).
I will buy the DVD's when they are fixed. I have heard that they might just stereo-ize the Japanese version,
which would be absolutely wonderful. When they work out all the bugs then I will most definitely
start ordering them. When the PS2 comes out, I will use that as my DVD player.
I'll buy the first two DVD's if I find a 50 dollar bill on the ground one day... heh.
Alot of people are out there to earn 'instant fame' with 'borrowing' from other sites.
It is really sad that people get the idea in their head that they can 'borrow' until they get success
and then get original stuff, because that is impossible. Only an original site with original
stuff on it can achieve great success. There are far, far too many crappy sites out there that are
ripping hard-working guys (like me) and girls off. I wish there was an easier way to get rid of page pirates,
but there is not. Also, way too many of you guys have the exact same attack list and need to just take it down.
If people want to see an attack list, link them to
Greg Werner's Ultimate DBZ Information Site.
Also, learn to RESIZE your pictures! I hate it when sites have a 700 pixel by 500 pixel pic
on their main.
Link submissions are the most annoying thing in the world. I, like many other sites, receive them
all the time. Barely any of them are good and even when you put up strict linking standards, the people
still send you sites that don't follow any of them. I really wish people would make sure that
their site fulfills every linking requirement BEFORE they submit the link in!
99% of visitors don't read the FAQ. We webmasters have that section up for a reason, for kami-sama's sake.
You're supposed to go to it to see if your question is already answered. This way it is a win-win
situation. We don't have to answer the same question every day and you don't have to wait for a reply.
Atleast have purposes for criticizing a site. If you are going to say someone's site sucks,
give various reasons as to why you made that choice and maybe we could do something to fix the
problems. Also, if you like a site, make sure to email the webmaster and tell him or her so.
No webmaster can ever get enough positive feedback for their site, and chances are that by
giving positive comments you may increase the life of the site that you like so much.
Please get the newest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape.
Otherwise, many sites may not look right or work right for you and we don't want to hear your
complaints for matters that are not our fault. Also, set your browser to not cache everything!
I am so sick of people telling me a link to something doesn't work when I took it down 10 months ago.
Atleast try refreshing because often-times that helps. Also I am sick and tired of people who don't know how to read!
There is a thing that says 'Having Downloading? Click Here.' Do people click there? NO. So because they
don't listen, they end up not downloading right and think that it's my problem, when it is clearly theirs.
Running a site is hard and frustrating work most of the time. I try to maintain atleast two updates
a week and that is difficult to do. Don't demand webmasters to update more often because if they could
they would. I can't update multimedia as much as I wanted to because I fear that if I take up too
much space and have too little hits then I may lose my good host. I add more multimedia as I get
more hits. If I can get as many hits as Ginga GIRI GIRI or Planet Namek then you can expect alot
more multimedia updates, so make sure to let your friends know about this site. I know sites that have
absolutely nothing original at all, yet they get way more hits than I do. I hope that I can get a bigger
audience before I have to shut this site down, so please spread the word about this site before it is too late.
I hate parents who complain about everything 'bad' on television. You know, the parents who
call into Pioneer, FUNimation, Cartoon Network, etc. and complain about a part that contains 'too
much violence' or 'too much sexuality.' It is because of them that anime is censored in the first place.
Why do they complain? They fear what their children see may affect them and cause them to do 'bad
things.' Well their kids wouldn't be effected by it if the parents would sit down with their children
and tell them what is right from what is wrong and that everything on anime is fantasy and is made-up.
Animated violence should NOT be censored. It ruins several needed emotional factors in anime (Krillin's
impalement, anyone?) and wouldn't be necessary if parents would do their jobs and not leave it up to
TV to babysit their kids. Now, 'What about nudity?' You say. Well, that can be solved too. First of all,
a naked body is nothing to be ashamed of, especially animated nudity. Second, parents should teach
their kids to simply turn the channel (if they are young) or just tell their kids not to watch the show
because it is for an older audience. If parents would do this with their children then anime censorship
would not be needed. Parents don't like Dr. Briefs's smoking? Then they can just tell
their kids smoking is wrong, gross, and uncool and if they are caught doing it then they will be grounded
for a month or whatever. I could go on forever on this subject but I think I've summed up my thoughts
on animated censorship the best I can.
In this year of running this site I have also learned that you can meet
great people through the internet and that hard work (most of the time) pays off.
Well, that's about the most of it. Later minna! Thanks for reading.
